Last year, Nate put up an Oscars discussion thread which was very popular (104 comments by the end, though some of it wasn't awards-related). It's a break from the heavy politics and it's a chance for all our readers to talk about whatever they're thinking in real time. He's busy tonight, but he did do a short post on the expanded Best Picture list a month ago, so I've decided to post it again and see what happens. Note: I am not watching, and I've never watched them; so if I comment, it will largely be on the movies themselves, of the ones I've seen.
Anyway, here you go. Comment away.

In fact, while I intend to see some of the rest soon, the only Best Picture nominated films I saw were "Up" and "Inglourious Basterds," both of which I enjoyed immensely.
There's a live list of the winners on CNN, so I can check periodically, without actually watching. I see Christopher Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for "Inglourious Basterds." He was pretty super, imo.
1. I absolutely hate the emphasis on women's fashion at the Oscars. I wish the female talent were interviewed more on their craft and experience than their outfit!
2. Kathryn Bigelow should win the Oscar for Best Director.
3. If Avatar wins Best Picture or James Cameron wins Best Director, I will stop watching the Oscars.
4. A Serious Man and Inglourious Basterds were the best films I saw this year, but I am rooting for Precious.
5. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin: funny, mean, or both?
Well, if you took the name "best picture" very, very literally, I suppose Avatar would fit the bill. It's probably the most interesting "picture."
For Best Picture, I'm pulling for Inglorious Basterds, or even something unconventional like District 9 or Up. If Precious or Avatar win though, I'll be raging.
I don't see a lot of movies, and I'm not a big movie fan in general, but I want to reiterate that Inglourious Basterds was probably the best film I've ever seen. I wasn't bored for even a minute of it. It was great.
I also think even more important than it being awesome is the fact that Tarantino hasn't won anything ever. I think now would be a good time for that.
Really? Interesting. It was the first of his films I'd seen, actually.
Inglorious Basterds was probably the most brilliantly crafted film I've seen this year, but it was too incoherent for me. And James Cameron is the most self involved, unoriginal director nominated this year.
Also, on an unrelated note, that horror tribute was pretty cool (except for the random shots of films that weren't horror...like Twilight, Beetlejuice, etc.) Horror is a very unrecognized genre, for obvious reasons. But I could argue horror films have pioneered areas like make up and special effects in filmmaking. But I could a little biased...or a lot biased.
My bad... no brackets.
Why do you say it was incoherent? The only part that threw me a little was where it skipped a bit in time without really indicating that clearly. But after a couple minutes, I figured it out.
I'd say if anything the non-linear approach to the narrative kept it interesting to see how it all was connected in the end. To be fair, Tarantino has done that in all of his films, but it still keeps it interesting.
Yeah, she just won a Razzie, too, on Saturday (different film though).
AVATAR MIGHT NOT GET BEST PICTURE
As I am likely the only person who saw The Blind Side. Her win is well deserved.
From NYT: "Kathryn Bigelow, the director of “The Hurt Locker,” becomes the first woman to win an Oscar for best director."
So Jane.Addams, you got your wish.
It's playing on campus this weekend... should I see it?
I don't think so...Gabourey Sidibe was absolutely robbed.
The movie itself isn't anything new. I enjoyed watching it but she's definitely the best part.
Also Gabourey played herself in that movie. Got snubbed of nothing.
And Sandra Bullock didn't play herself?
Remember you can always chime in on the comments section of every post, which helps make this a better blog.
Brodsky, doesn't Bullock have an accent in that movie that she normally doesn't have?
Yeah last time I checked Sandra Bullock didn't have a southern accent, or ever played a motherly figure. As opposed to an angsty girl playing an angsty girl.
Mo'nique got the reward that everyone seemed to considered well deserved, I think the movie got enough recognition from that.
